Carcasium is a boutique winery located in the vineyard region of Calabria, Italy.

The architecture is a direct result of programmatic adjacencies and environmental response to the site. Designed as an experience to engage with the wine making process, visitors are welcomed into a grand lobby with tasting area. As the roof expands and compresses, the procession leads to the crushing and pressing rooms followed by the fermentation rooms and lastly to the aging and bottling areas.

Inspired by the region’s tradition of artistic ceramics, the building is clad in white ceramic scales. Strategic portions of the facade are operable and allow for passive ventilation that works in conjunction with the building orientation and prevailing winds.
